Every dog thinks it's earned a treat. (Most of them are right.) But when you turn the packet over, not every treat is quite as good as it looks on the front. A lot of the treats lining supermarket shelves are packed with artificial colours, flavourings and fillers that do very little for your dog beyond making the packet look bright and cheerful.
Natural treats take a different approach. They keep things simple, and for a lot of dogs that turns out to be exactly what busy noses and happy tummies are after. Here's why they're worth reaching for.
What actually makes a treat natural?
There's no magic definition, but a good natural treat usually comes down to a short, honest ingredients list. Think single-ingredient chews and treats made from real meat, fish or plant ingredients, with none of the artificial extras. If you can read the label and understand every word on it, that's a very good sign.
The opposite? Long lists full of things you'd need a science degree to pronounce, plus artificial colours that are really only there to catch your eye, because your dog genuinely doesn't care what colour their snack is.
Fewer nasties, more of the good stuff
The biggest win with natural treats is what they leave out. No artificial colours, no artificial flavours, no unnecessary preservatives padding things out. Just wholesome ingredients doing the actual work.
That matters because treats add up across a day and across a lifetime. Choosing treats made from real, recognisable ingredients means every little reward is doing something worthwhile, rather than just filling a gap.
Kinder on little tummies
Some dogs have a stomach of steel. Plenty of others don't. If your dog gets a bit unsettled after certain snacks, artificial additives and mystery fillers are a common culprit.
Simple, natural treats especially single-ingredient ones tend to be easier for many dogs to digest, precisely because there's less going on in them. Every dog is different, of course, so if your dog has a sensitive tummy or known allergies, it's always worth introducing anything new slowly and checking in with your vet if you're unsure.
Great for busy noses and happy chewing
Treats aren't only about taste. A good natural chew gives your dog something to do, a proper job to get their teeth into. That bit of gnawing and working away at a chew is brilliant mental enrichment, helping keep dogs settled, occupied and happy.
Natural chews in particular tend to last longer and give more of that satisfying, absorbing chew time than a treat that disappears in one gulp. It's the difference between a snack and a genuinely good afternoon.
A little still goes a long way
Here's the honest bit: even the best natural treats are still treats. They're the extra on top of a balanced diet, not a replacement for it. The lovely thing is that because natural treats are made from proper ingredients, a small amount feels like a proper reward — so you can keep tails wagging without overdoing it.
A good rule of thumb is to keep treats to around ten percent of your dog's daily food. (More on exactly how to do that in a separate post.)
